The Land & Its Legacy
A Region Shaped by
Resilience & Grace
Kailahun District sits at the very edge of Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, nestled where the country's borders meet Guinea and Liberia in a tangle of ancient forest. This is one of West Africa's most botanically rich landscapes — a land where century-old cacao trees grow beside winding rivers.
The Mende people, the region's predominant cultural group, have cultivated this land with deep reverence for generations. Their traditions of storytelling, hospitality, and masquerade are woven into the fabric of daily life here.
Today, Kailahun is quietly re-emerging as a destination of genuine character — a place where travellers who seek more than a beach find something rarer: authentic connection with land, people, and culture.
“The forests of the Eastern Province are among the oldest and most biologically diverse in West Africa — home to chimpanzees, rare birds, and plants found nowhere else on Earth.”

Deep Roots
Long before colonial cartography, Kailahun was a crossroads of culture, trade, and forest wisdom. The Mende chieftaincy system built communities that have endured for centuries.

Living Forest
Dense rainforest canopy shelters extraordinary biodiversity — from chimpanzees to hundreds of endemic bird species that still call these ancient groves home.

Cacao Heritage
The region's cacao story runs deep, weaving together commerce, culture, and community across generations of farming families who shaped this landscape.
Executive Statement
Founder & CEO,
Sahr L. Jusu

When I first envisioned Cacao Resort, I wasn't simply dreaming of a place to stay — I was dreaming of a place to belong. A place rooted in the soil of Kailahun District, where the forests of eastern Sierra Leone stretch wide and deep, and where the land holds stories older than any of us. That connection to place has been my guiding light from the very beginning.
Nature is not a backdrop at Cacao Resort — it is our co-creator. Kailahun is a region of extraordinary natural beauty, and I made a personal commitment from day one that this resort would honour it, protect it, and give back more than it takes. Every design decision, every material sourced, every practice we adopt is guided by a profound respect for the landscape that cradles us. I believe that luxury and sustainability are not opposites — in Kailahun, they are one and the same.
This journey has been deeply personal to me. I was shaped by the warmth of this region — its people, its rhythms, its resilience. Cacao Resort is, in many ways, my love letter to Kailahun and to Sierra Leone. My hope is that every guest who walks through our doors leaves with that same sense of wonder — a renewed connection to the earth, and a deeper appreciation for a corner of West Africa that the world is only beginning to discover.
Thank you for being part of this story. Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning like an old friend, you are warmly welcome here — in a place built with intention, rooted in nature, and open with heart.

From our family to yours, we are so glad you are here.”
The Compelling Case
Six Reasons to
Escape East
In a world of overexposed destinations, Kailahun offers something increasingly rare — genuine discovery.

Untouched Nature
Wake to birdsong and the cool breath of forest air. The Eastern Province's green corridors are home to chimpanzees, forest elephants, and hundreds of bird species — with no mass tourism to disturb them.

Living Culture
Witness Mende masquerade traditions, village ceremonies, and artisan crafts. This is culture experienced — not performed. The warmth of Kailahun's people will linger far longer than any photograph.

The Cacao Story
The region's cacao heritage runs deep. Walk through working farms and understand the remarkable journey from pod to bar — a firsthand encounter with one of Sierra Leone's most storied crops.

True Disconnection
No traffic, no noise, no relentless notifications. The rhythm of Kailahun moves at the pace of the forest — ideal for those who genuinely need to rest, reflect, and restore perspective.

Hidden Waterfalls
The surrounding forest hides cascading waterfalls and swimming holes known only to locals. Cacao Resort's guided tours unlock these secret places, turning every visit into genuine adventure.

Accessible Escape
Kailahun is far enough from Freetown's bustle to feel like another world, but reachable enough for a meaningful short break — ideal for those based in Sierra Leone or visiting West Africa.
